Welcome to the Latin American Studies Home Page.

This site provides information about Latin American Studies at Appalachian State University.  Under the umbrella of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, LAS provides students an opportunity to design course programs around their interests in Latin America, while offering them an opportunity to balance a broadly based knowledge of Latin America with a choice of concentrations in other traditional disciplines. Professors in our program are drawn from departments throughout the university. The program encourages and supports education, research and service in Latin America, as well as promoting education and awareness of Latin America among the academic community of Appalachian State University.

Summer 2004 Study Abroad

We are especially excited about our study abroad offerings this summer which include study in Bolivia, Cuba, & Chiapas Mexico.

Periodically, the LAS Committee is hosting a series of readings of papers in progress by LAS Faculty.  In this way LAS faculty receive valuable scholarly input for colleagues.

The LAS Committee encourages students to study abroad either in established study abroad exchange programs or in shorter summer programs. Currently, Appalachian State University has exchange agreements with universities in Mexico Nicaragua, and Costa Rica with other negotiations underway.

An important resource at this site is our online Latin America web links. This depository of web resources for study of topics related to Latin America will continue to grow with time.
Slides from Abroad Students of Latin American Studies are encouraged to be socially active  abroad, developing a deeper sense of of their neighbors in the Americas.
Students and others interested in Latin American Studies are invited to share their experiences and research with members of the LAS committee and participate in LAS forums, discussions and other activities.
